Interview: Rising Stars #3 “Miguel”
How would you describe your sound and music?
I would describe my sound and music to be, fearless, to be eclectric, and when i say eclectric i mean a balanced collage of elements that are timeless
from really great pieces of music in the past and a unique blend of my own style and take of classic rock, funk and hip-hop all blended together.
Who are your favorite rnb producers and who would you like to work with?
My rnb favorite producers.. Uhm.. The funny thing is, most of the producers that are my favorites they don’t only produce urban music you know. Actually most of my favorite producers do a lot of any stuff as well. I mean right now, the first single that we put out of this album is “All I Want Is You” with J. Cole. Salaam Remi produced that and he does a lot of reggae, but aside from that he does hip-hop and soul music as well. He’s definitely one of my favorite producers that does majority soul or urban music. Other producers that i really enjoy listening to im a fan of their work include most of which are on my album, Fisticuffs they are from Los Angeles, State Of Emergency they are also on the album, i don’t know if you guys are familiar with Flying Lotus, he’s definitely one of my favorites, a really dope electronic producer. There are so many man. Ryan Leslie is a great producer as well, but then again i wouldn’t classify him as rnb producer.
Frank Ocean, Jhené Aiko, The Weeknd and yourself are bringing that classic rnb music back, but can you name some other artists that’s on the rise?
I mean you pretty much named them! It’s funny because i don’t classify them as rnb, although Jhené has a more contemporary appeal, she still use a lot of her hip-hop influences which i think what makes her interesting and obviously her voice is really unique, so between the way she delivers, her lyrics and the melodies and her choices in her melodies is what sets her apart. Frank, same thing you know, and i think his choices in the music have a lot to do with his delivery as well. The Weeknd, i actually just been listening to that, and he seems like he is very much influenced by hip-hop and rock, just in his attitude. The thing i love about Jhené is that she is very introspective, what i love about Frank is that he is very picturous, he’s a great story teller, he tells picturous stories, what i like about The Weeknd is that he’s unapologetic like i said, he’s very straight forward.
You’ve worked with Blu several times, but which rappers do you like and admire?
MF Doom, Blu, Bigge, Pac, Cole, i recently got into Big Sean and i had the pleasure to meet him, he was very very cool. Emcees, there are so many, even though U-N-I isn’t working anymore, U-N-I is definitely the homies, so shout outs to Thurzday and to Yonas, very very cool.
What’s on your iPod right now?
Uhm.. I’ve got Wood Kid that im listening to, im listening to Jai Paul, im listening to Sunny Moon, im listening to Bigge, a lot of J. Dilla, always a lot of J. Dilla, a little bit of Lenny Kravitz here and there, this band called Dom, Theophilus London. A lot of soundtracks, the Tron soundtrack, the old Tron soundtrack, what else.. I still kinda go through the Frank Ocean album, The Weeknd is cool, Jhené mixtape is pretty dope, Peter Bjorn & John just put an album out that just got which is dope, The Strokes just put an album out that im listening to. Black Joe Lewis is very very dope.
Which songs do you like to listen to, when are you are with a girl in the bedroom?
Let me go through my playlist. Sunny Moon’s cover of “Houstatlantavegas”, Radiohead “All I Need”, D’ Angelo “Send It On”, Snow Patrol “You Could Be Happy”, N.E.R.D. “Take Me”, J. Dilla, Lil Wayne “Single”, The Weeknd “Wicked Games” it’s pretty dope, Slum Village “Climax”, N.E.R.D. “Brain”, David Bowie’s “Space Oddity”, Slum Village’s “Call Me”, “Love Crimes” by Frank Ocean. There’s a lot man!
Which artists would you like to work with and what features are coming up?
Artists that i would i like to work with. I would love to work with Lenny Kravitz man, that would be amazing! I just finished few sessions with Diggy Simmons which is cool, actually four to be exact. Not so many collaborations coming up, i got some stuff with Cole, im working with J. Cole again.
What’s your favorite clothing brand and where do you get inspiration for your style?
You know what, im not really a clothing brand whore. I have like favorite boutiques, where i find random pieces. I mean i just like to mix all kinds of random pieces. But my style is all like timeless and classic pieces, things that are current and have that futuristic touch.
What’s the concept for the new album?
Pinguins! Nah im jokin’! There’s no concept, because right about now im not working on a second album. Im working, but im not really putting a second album together. Im still focused on my current album. I do have a couple of mixtape concepts, but i can’t tell you otherwise i have to kill you!
What do you know about Scandinavia?
Scandinavia! I know absolutely nothing about, because im ignorant! I heard that there’s beautiful women though!
Can we expect to see you in Europe?
